AUTUMN 2000
ISSUE 32
The latest issue of Celtic Connections
features further fascinating and inspiring articles - these include
details of the recent internationally-significant discovery on the
Scilly Island of
Bryher of a unique Iron Age burial
in which both a sword and a bronze mirror were found, and the site's
subsequent excavation by Cornwall Archaeology Unit. This exciting
discovery is unique to North West Europe. Also in this issue there is
a comprehensive account of the origins, history and spiritual purpose
of The Labyrinth, and a picture gallery of Images from Ireland,
which include the Turoe
Stone and the Gallarus Oratory, as
well as the unique monolithic Celtic cross on the remote island of
Skellig Michael , off the coast of County Kerry.
The magnificent Cross of The Scriptures, shown above, is featured on the front cover of this
issue, and dates from the early 9th century. It is in the grounds of
the ancient Celtic monastic community of Clonmacnoise in County
Offaly, Ireland. The picture was taken by the Rev. George Dobbs, who
leads pilgrimage groups to ancient Celtic monastic sites in Wales,
Scotland and Ireland.
Also in this issue you can read the
story of the remarkable Celtic
beadwork and buttons created by
Annie Wealleans of Black Dragon Crafts in south west Wales. There is
a further section on a newly discovered Iron age settlement
dating back to at least 500BC, at present undergoing excavation at
Portesham in West Dorset. This was discovered initially by accident
when property developers moved in to prepare ground for new
buildings. Plus further articles and information to stimulate your
interest in the Celtic World.
